Perfectionism: Taking The Joy Out of Success

I had a great discussion yesterday on my Women Enjoying Success radio show with Performance Coach Janet Hilts about the destructiveness of perfectionism. It started me thinking about myself – I call myself a recovering perfectionist. It’s such a hard road to go down, having to be perfect.

You’re going to want to listen to the entire show Perfectionism: How It Can Take The Joy Out of Success because it is literally filled with powerful information about why perfectionism is so destructive to our self-esteem and our desire to succeed. Janet and I both spoke from first hand experience – it was empowering.

I’ve included a link to the radio show at the bottom of this post.

Here are some of the highlights from my side of the discussion:

1. I was “trained” to be perfect. I was praised for being the “perfect little lady,” having the perfect paper, getting the perfect report card, etc. Perfect became a standard by which I judged myself and my worth.

2. I learned there were many perks to being “perfect” – praise, honors, love, accolades, recognition, attention and even monetary rewards. I was sure that was the way I was going to live my life – striving for perfection.

3. My thinking became: “If I’m not perfect, then I’m not good, or smart or lovable, or talented or worthy or deserving of being successful. I had to be perfect because good isn’t good enough.”

4. By the time I realized that perfection was an impossible standard to live up to, my self-esteem had suffered big time. I had put up my own internal glass ceiling that was limiting my ability to succeed.

5. It’s taken many years of self-development but I’ve learned that I can be great and do things excellently and I don’t have to strive for perfection.

6. I realize that perfectionists prepare to be prepared for success. They get the schooling, buy all the tools, gather the information, go to all the meetings – they spend so much time preparing, they don’t have time to actually “do.” Sometimes we have to take a leap of faith and go for it!

7. Perfectionists take the joy out of success. When you focus on perfectionism, it is very difficult to give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. After all, it wasn’t a job well done if it wasn’t perfect! Success becomes a joyless struggle.

8. When your unconscious/subconscious mind realizes that you don’t enjoy success – you begin to keep yourself safe from the discomfort of success by yanking the rug of success out from yourself  – that’s called self-sabotage.

9. The need to be perfect leads to a distrust of the ability to judge what’s good and what isn’t. When you can’t trust your own feelings of self-worth, you look to others to define and affirm self-esteem – tell you how good you are and how well you’re doing.

10. As you continue to allow outside sources to set the standard for your accomplishments, you’re chipping away at even more of your healthy self-esteem. It’s like a never-ending cycle of what I call “self-abuse.”

The above is just an outline of what I covered in this information packed radio broadcast – Janet had even more valuable insights and information. It’s worth your time to listen to the whole thing with pen and paper and take notes. Just click on the white arrow and the program will begin to play. You can listen 24/7 on your computer or you can download it from iTunes. At iTunes we are listed under Women Enjoying Success

How Do You Handle Change?

Change is inevitable – our lives change minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour and day-to-day. The ability to handle change in positive and productive ways can often make the difference between positive outcomes and disappointment. Let me ask you this: How do you handle change – both the little ones and the big ones?

When faced with change, here are a few suggestions that have helped me to go forward in positive ways:

1. Creativity – It’s how you look at a challenge that can make the difference between growing and learning and wallowing in worry and negativity. Creative people seem to embrace change as a way to think out of the box and come out of their comfort zone. Without creativity, change can seem more frightening and uncertain.

2. Optimism – Are you a person who sees the glass of opportunity as half full or half empty? The person who can see the positives of changing, learning and growing, is the person who is more open and receptive to success. Optimism is a powerful success tool.

3. Sense of humor – The ability to see the bright side means giving yourself the resources to go forward with hope and faith. Humor and laughter can diffuse a negative situation by opening your mind and heart to greater possibility and creativity.

4. Self-confidence – Knowing that you can handle whatever life sends your way can keep you going positively forward no matter how tough the situation. This positive and optimistic inner knowing can enable you to overcome obstacles intelligently and assertively. The more you believe in yourself and your ability to thrive, the more excited you are to face and grow with life’s changes.

5. Seeing the “big” picture clearly – The person who knows where they are going today, tomorrow and next year, is the person who can handle change with greater self-confidence. When you have the “big” picture clearly formed in your mind, changes can and will be handled thoughtfully and creatively. When you know where you’re going and how you intend to get there, you’ll be able to handle the distractions more confidently and professionally.

6. Building on your inner strengths – When you truly understand and believe in your inner strengths and motivators, you’re able to handle change with greater self-confidence. Knowing you can adapt and thrive during life’s changes increases the belief that you can and will succeed in the days to come.

7. Taking a look at where you are now – Sometimes change provides the perfect opportunity to look long and hard at where you are now and where you can be in the future. Is the change you’re currently facing a wakeup call to review and analyze your current lifestyle or goals? Is it time to revisit your vision for the future?

Think about this: How do you embrace change? Is it an opportunity to learn and grow or, one that frightens and discourages you? Change can offer the perfect opportunity to embrace life and go forward in whole new and positive directions.

I’ll leave you with this quotation: “Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.” Pauline R. Kezer

How To Cultivate An Agreeable Speech – 1922

I’m fascinated with what we can learn from the “guide books” that influenced our great grandparents, grandparents and even our parents.  Are we still influenced by Emily Post today? Let me know what you think . . .

How To Cultivate An Agreeable Speech

First of all, remember that while affectation is odious, crudeness must be overcome. A low voice is always pleasing, not whispered or murmured, but low in pitch. Do not talk at the top of your head, nor at the top of your lungs. Do not slur whole sentences together; on the other hand, do not pronounce as though each syllable were a separate tongue and lip exercise.

As a nation we do not talk so much too fast, as too loud. Tens of thousands twang and slur and shout and burr! Many of us drawl and many others of us race tongues and breath at full speed, but, as already said, the speed of our speech does not matter so much. Pitch of voice matters very much and so does pronunciation—enunciation is not so essential—except to one who speaks in public.

Enunciation means the articulation of whatever you have to say distinctly and clearly. Pronunciation is the proper sounding of consonants, vowels and the accentuation of each syllable.

There is no better way to cultivate a perfect pronunciation; apart from association with cultivated people, than by getting a small pronouncing dictionary of words in ordinary use, and reading it word by word, marking and studying any that you use frequently and mispronounce. When you know them, then read any book at random slowly aloud to yourself, very carefully pronouncing each word. The consciousness of this exercise may make you stilted in conversation at first, but by and by the “sense” or “impulse” to speak correctly will come.

This is a method that has been followed by many men handicapped in youth through lack of education, who have become prominent in public life, and by many women, who likewise handicapped by circumstances, have not only made possible a creditable position for themselves, but have then given their children the inestimable advantage of learning their mother tongue correctly at their mother’s knee.

The Power of a Penny Doubled

There’s a story that’s been circulating for years. It’s the one about the young boy who is offered either a million dollars cash or the amount of a penny double each day for thirty days. This simple story teaches us all a valuable lesson about abundance, wealth and patience.

One day a rich merchant said to his young son, “Son, I have an important question to ask you. Think carefully before you answer.”

“Yes father.” replies the eager son.

“I will give you the total amount of one penny doubled each day for one month or a million dollars cash right now. Which will you choose,” the father asks with a sly grin?

The son answers without hesitation, “The million dollars of course father.”

The wise father looks at the boy and with a knowing smiled takes out paper and pen. “Son,” he says quietly, “Come sit next to me and learn a lesson about wealth and patience.”

Faced with the same question, which would you choose the million dollars cash or the total amount of a single penny doubled each day for 30 days?

Let’s study the power of a penny doubled.

We’re going to take that one shinny penny and double it each day for 30 days. Believe it or not, we’ll end up with much more than a million dollars.

Day 1 – $.01

Day 2 – $.02

Day 3 – $.04

Day 4 – $.08

Day 5 – $.16

Day 6 – $.32

Day 7 – $.64

Day 8 – $1.28

Day 9 – $2.56

Day 10 – $5.12

Day 11 – $10.24

Day 12 – $20.48

Day 13 – $40.96

Day 14 – $81.92

Day 15 – $163.84

Day 16 – $327.68

Day 17 – $655.36

Day 18 – $1,310.72

Day 19 – $2,621.44

Day 20 – $5,242.88

Day 21 – $10,485.76

Day 22 – $20,971.52

Day 23 – $41, 943.04

Day 24 – $83,886.08

Day 25 – $167,772.16

Day 26 – $335,544.32

Day 27 – $671,088.64

Day 28 – $1,342,177.28

Day 29 – $2,684,354.56

Day 30 – $5,368,709.12

The power of a single penny doubled is amazing isn’t it?

Yes, I know this doesn’t happen in real life but there is a real life lesson to be learned.

Here’s the lesson in this story: The speed at which money grows can be amazing. Even if your savings or investments are small and minimal right now, start somewhere and watch your money grow and multiple over the months and years.

There is also a powerful lesson about patience and not giving up before payday. Let’s say for example you decided to take your money out on day seven or seventeen or twenty-seven, you wouldn’t have the same results, would you?

Wealth building is about the discipline of having a plan and developing the patience to stick to that plan until it comes to fruition. If there is over a million dollars in the power of a single penny doubled, imagine what you can do with your savings plan.

Here’s the moral of this story: The next time you see a penny on the street, make time to bend down and pick it up. You never know, you could be potentially holding $5,368,709.12 in your hand.

Secrets of Success – Power of Dedication

successful8

You can listen and read the text!
Be sure your speakers are turned up.

Length of audio: 6 minutes 54 seconds

The third and final part of our Secrets of Success series is the power of Dedication. I’m talking about the unwavering dedication you’ll be making to your successes. You know, the type of dedication that combines desire and determination with the powerful mental, physical and emotional focus that keeps you motivated toward the future.

Let me ask you: Do you truly want to succeed at your goals? Are you willing to make an unwavering commitment to success? Those are just two questions I think about when I think of the power of dedication. If you truly want to succeed and to make your goals a reality then it takes an emotional, physical and sometimes even a financial dedication to your future.

Miriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines dedication as: A devoting or setting aside for a particular purpose. Other words associated with dedication are: unwavering, firm, steadfast, steady, untiring, dogged, resolute, and unswerving.

Maybe the best definition of all comes from legendary movie mogul Cecil B. de Mille, “Most of us serve our ideals by fits and starts. The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.”

Question: How do you tap into your unwavering dedication to succeed?

Answer: As soon as you become convinced that no one can dissuade you from going forward, toward your goal, you have developed dedication. You are dedicated to a positive outcome as soon as you develop the positive mental attitude of success. A dedicated positive mental attitude is one that combines your desire and determination to succeed with an unstoppable belief in yourself and your goals. This unstoppable belief to succeed must be strong enough to keep you going forward, no matter the twists and turns in your path.

The practical aspect of dedication begins with developing and executing a viable plan of action. This is a workable plan that combines the emotional and physical aspects of success – it is a combination of your powerful “why” and the day-to-day how-tos for making success reality. Dedication comes from somewhere deep inside – it is a strong and powerful desire and determination to succeed.

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Is there a modern day or historical figure who has inspired me with their dedication to a purpose, cause or goal? Could it be someone who accomplished what I am setting out to accomplish? How soon can I get to the library or bookstore to pick up their biography?

There are many motivational and practical lessons we can learn from successful people. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel – learn the lessons and strategies from those who have gone before and succeeded.

2. How can I break my goals for the future into bite-sized pieces? Going forward begins with the first step. Sometimes though, the first step can be the most difficult. Dedication means devoting yourself to doing at least one positive thing each day toward achieving your goal. Yes, each day!

Break your goal into daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly tasks. When you have a doable and viable plan of action, it is easier to see the practical “hows” for actually making your vision a reality. With dedication comes an inner commitment to going positively forward, one determined step at a time.

3. How will I keep my desire, determination and dedication alive and strong in the weeks and months to come? It’s a fact of life, we become discouraged when things aren’t going as planned. How will you tap into those inner motivators? Is it a vision board, motivational and inspirational audios, a telephone call with a loved one, journaling or maybe some time spent in nature? What will keep your dedication for achieving your goal alive and strong?

Dedication to making your goal reality takes an unwavering ability to tap into your inner motivators – the reason(s) you are determined to achieve and succeed. Successful people have the ability to motivate themselves toward success with a powerful desire and determination that comes from somewhere deep within.

Achieving your goal combines all three of our Secrets of Success – Desire, Determination and Dedication. The more in tune you are with your burning desire, unstoppable determination and unwavering dedication to success, the more success you will be enjoying today, tomorrow and into the future.

A final quotation from Patty Berg, a founding member and then leading player on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, sums it up best: “What does it take to be a champion? Desire, dedication, determination, concentration and the will to win.”

I believe in your ability to succeed and thrive today, tomorrow and in the many years ahead – here’s to your unstoppable success!

Make Your Future Bigger, Bolder and Brighter

dream1

Make Your Future Bigger, Bolder and Brighter -

5 Easy Ways To Make Your Goals Come True

Many of us shy away from writing out the goals that will make our future bigger, bolder and brighter. It is as if we’re afraid to live the life of our dreams. Here are five simple steps that will take your dreams and turn them into achievable goals.

Make a commitment to following these five easy steps and before you know it, you’ll be living the life you’ve always wanted.

1. Write Out Exactly What You Want - the more detail the better.

It’s hard to achieve a bigger, bolder and brighter future if you’re not sure what that future looks and feels like. Instead of thinking and talking in generalities, be specific about what you want your life to be like in six months, one year, or five years. The more detail you can put into your plan, the clearer your goal will become.

2. Write Out Exactly Why You Want It – the more emotion the better.

It’s often said that if your “why” is big enough, nothing will stop you from making your goal reality. A “why” comes from your emotions – it is comes from your heart. The more connection you have to your heart’s desire, the stronger the “why.” The stronger your why, the less likely you’ll give up before making your goal a reality.

3. Write Out Exactly How You’re Going To Get What You Want - the more steps the better.

Now comes the plan. This is the practical side of goal setting – this is how you’re going to make your bigger, bolder and brighter dream come to life. Start at the beginning with the first step. What do you need to do first, second, third, etc. Break each step into bite-sized pieces. Break these bite-sized pieces into daily and weekly tasks or chores. It is easier to achieve a goal when it is broken down into small achievable pieces.

4. Write Out Exactly The Payoff For Achieving Your Goals – the more exciting the better.

You’ve written your “why” for making your goal reality. Now, make your goal come to life in your heart and mind. Make the time to dream the way a child would dream about the future. How does it feel to be living out your goal? What sounds do you hear or smells do you smell? What does it look like to be living your goal? Write or record exactly what your life is like once your goal is reality. Allow your excitement and happiness to shine through.

5. Write Out Exactly Why You Deserve To Live Your Goal - the more rewarding the better.

We often stop ourselves from achieving our goals because somewhere in our mind we’re not feeling worthy and deserving of living the life of our dreams. Write out in a paragraph or two about all the reasons you deserve to be living a bigger, bolder, brighter life. If any negative feelings emerge, it is better to deal with them now and not allow them to sabotage your dreams. Acknowledge the negativity, decide how to deal with it and then choose to go forward in positive and productive ways.

So, what do you think? Isn’t this an easy way to make your goals come true? I didn’t say it wouldn’t take work, but the work doesn’t have to be difficult. Go for your bigger, bolder and brighter future – I believe in you!

Secrets of Success – Power of Determination

successful52

You can listen and read the text!
Be sure your speakers are turned up.

Length of audio: 6 minutes 14 seconds

Determination in life, and in business, is a combination of tapping into our unstoppable desire to succeed and knowing how to consistently focus time and energy on going positively forward. As we’re going for our hopes, dreams and goals the power of determination can help us find solutions and eliminate self-doubt.

In part two of our three part Secrets of Success series, we’ll be exploring the power of Determination.

When I think of determination, I’m reminded of the popular children’s book The Little Engine That Could:

A little railroad engine was employed about a station yard for such work as it was built for, pulling a few cars on and off the switches. One morning it was waiting for the next call when a long train of freight-cars asked a large engine in the roundhouse to take it over the hill “I can’t; that is too much a pull for me,” said the great engine built for hard work. Then the train asked another engine, and another, only to hear excuses and be refused. In desperation, the train asked the little switch engine to draw it up the grade and down on the other side. “I think I can,” puffed the little locomotive, and put itself in front of the great heavy train. As it went on the little engine kept bravely puffing faster and faster, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

As it neared the top of the grade, which had so discouraged the larger engines, it went more slowly. However, it still kept saying, “I–think–I–can, I–think–I–can.” It reached the top by drawing on bravery and then went on down the grade, congratulating itself by saying, “I thought I could, I thought I could.”

YourDictionary.com defines determination as: a firm intention; the quality of being resolute; firmness of purpose.

Claude M. Bristol, author of the classic book The Magic of Believing, wrote about determination this way: “It’s the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles.”

How do you define determination? When you think of being determined, what comes to mind? Do you think of determination as being emotional, spiritual or physical? Or, is it a combination of all three?

Question: Can someone develop unstoppable determination?

Answer: Absolutely, “yes!” The key is discovering and tapping into your personal and professional desire to consistently go forward, until your goal becomes reality. Harnessing the power and passion of your compelling “why” can make the difference between giving up and triumphantly achieving your goals.

Ask yourself these three questions:

1. What motivates me to succeed? What provides me with the greatest joy/purpose/motivation to succeed? What in my life is so important that I will not give up until this goal is achieved? Write out in detail the powerful “why” that it is so significant for you.

2. Is this motivation to succeed powerful enough to keep me going, even when the going gets tough? On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being the highest, how important is it to surround myself with this joy/purpose/motivation? Is this motivation compelling enough to create a burning and unstoppable desire to succeed? If the score is 9 or above, this joy/purpose/motivation is a powerful and compelling “why.”

3. How will tapping into this feeling of joy/purpose/motivation, propel me to keep going consistently forward?  How will focusing on this joy/purpose/motivation produce an unstoppable desire to overcome unforeseen challenges and keep me motivated toward my goals? Write out in detail what makes this joy/purpose/motivation so emotionally powerful for you.

The power of determination takes hold as soon you create an unstoppable “I think I can,” mindset and attitude. Are you ready to harness the unstoppable power of our second Secret of Success, which is the Power of Determination?
